Research Interests /Scientific Work

Main areas of research are ethecology (social behaviour, social structure, reproduction strategies) of several mammal species as well as population-ecological field investigations and developing of monitoring programmes for mammals and raptors.
Organization-committee of various national and international symposia and conferences, and given a lot of reports and poster demonstrations on research results on meetings, symposia, conferences in Germany and other countries (in German, English, Russian). Member of some scientific societies: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Säugetierkunde, Gesellschaft für Wildtier- und Jagdforschung, Ornithologenverband Sachsen-Anhalt, Internationale Georg-Wilhelm-Steller-Gesellschaft.
More than 150 publications included the edition/co-edition of 11 books.

  • 1976-1981: Research study at the Martin-Luther-University, Institute of Zoology. Dissertation: Ecological investigations on carabids in pine forests of the area „Dübener Heide“ under the aspect of anthropogenic caused environmental pollutions“
  • 1977: married, two children  (born 1978, 1980)
  • since 1981: working as scientific co-worker at the Institute of Zoology, Department of Animal Ecology with different tasks in teaching and research (laboratory of ethecology, co-working in project research, especially „Mongolia“, population ecology of endangered and protected species, monitoring, reproduction ecology, species at the end of the food chain and their prey, especially raptors). Since 2004 in the Department of Molecular Ecology.

2010 Research trip to the Baikal region

1977, 1984, 1988, 1990, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004: participation in several expeditions to Mongolia with the aims to investigate biological resources, biocenose research, biodiversity studies, investigation of agro-, steppe and desert ecosystems, investigation of aut-, dem- and synecology of protected and economical important species, especially Microtus brandti, Alticola-species, Castor fiber birulai, Dipodidae, Equus hemionus and raptors.
1997: research visit to the dessert-ecosystem of the Negev in Israel.
1998, 1999, 2000, 2003 and 2004: took place expeditions to Tyva (Russia) to investigate the small autochthonous Castor fiber tuvinicus population and to translocate animals to other rivers.
2001: were inspected the areas of Turkey, where some information on beavers have existed.
1989: some weeks at the A.N. Severcov-Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow and
1990: at the Institute of Zoology and Ecology of Animals of the University Lausanne (Switzerland) to do several karyologycal and molecularbiological investigations on the taxonomy of some small mammal species.
